The University of Gävle has approximately 16 000 students and more than 50 study programs and second-cycle programs including preschool teacher education, bachelor’s degree. 350 courses are offered in the fields of Humanities, Social and Natural Sciences and Technology. The University of Gävle was environmentally certified according to ISO 14001. This certification comprises education and research in collaboration with the surrounding community. University of Gävle has several research groups including Early Childhood Education, the ECE Group.

By means of our interdisciplinary research in four strategic areas – Sustainable Urban Development, Health-Promoting Work, Innovative Learning and Intelligent Industry – the University contributes to the work of tackling many of the challenges our society faces.
Our research is to a large extent conducted within our third-cycle programmes.
The University has the right to award third-cycle qualifications in ten subjects that are thematically connected to the strategic research areas. The subjects are:

- Environmental Psychology
- Geospatial information science
- Indoor environment
- Industrial engineering and management
- Nursing science
- Occupational health sciences
- Social work
Through creativity, openness and credibility, we shape a sustainable world in collaboration with the surrounding society. One example is that the business sector, external funders and the University co-finance third-cycle programmes in our graduate schools.
Sooner than the more traditional universities, we have adapted the programmes to the demands of the market and dared to try new types of teaching, for instance different forms of distance education. Today, the University of Gävle is one of Sweden’s leading universities when it comes to distance education.
Some distance education has a limited number of meetings at Gävle University, while others have meetings at one of the campus centers. Distance learning online is based on various forms of IT tools.
The wide range of distance courses enables students to live in their home town and still carry out academic studies.
Our campus at Kungsbäck in Gävle offers a lovely study environment with all teaching in one location. It is a place of knowledge only a few minutes from the centre.
Our campus is situated in a scenic area with Gävle River and the Boulogner Forest as our closest neighbours. The carefully re-built regiment barracks now contain a campus concentrated in space, enabling students, lecturers and researchers alike to work together in close connection.
However, our University promotes close connections not only on campus but also with our region and the rest of the world.
